In general, most professional engineers I know tend to regard UAD plugins as the most accurate emulation of whatever hardware units UAD has a version of. They work out deals with the hardware makers, so they always have access to technical documentation and to the people who make the hardware, etc. So the main difference is that UAD is ALL about having the most accurate emulations of analog gear. Most plugins meant for professionals cost north of $100 and most plugin makers have a more transparent and straightforward business model. So that's the business reason for why Waves plugins are so affordable.

So you pay $30 for a plugin, but if after a year you need to do a major OS upgrade, the plugin will likely be rendered incompatible and you'll need to pay Waves like $100 to upgrade the plugin. They can justify charging $30 per plugin because they have an intricate upgrade program which is where they make the bulk of their money. Waves has a business model which consists of "tricking" people into believing their products are often on sale (they are actually in "perpetual sale") and thus create urgency of purchase that way (they often throw in a countdown letting you know the sale is about to end or some crap like that). Let's get to this first, since it has NOTHING to do with the plugins themselves and everything to do with business. I mean if one is 30$, WHY is the other 120?
